On Page Content Optimization for SEO

There are some simple things you can do to optimize the content on each page to maximize the chances of ranking on page 1 of the Google SERPs.
The first thing to do is review your keyword research (you HAVE done your keyword research haven't you?) and select an appropriate keyword or keywords for each of the pages on your site that you want to improve the rankings for.
Keyword Research
I normally target a maximum of 2 or 3 related keyphrases for each page, sometimes I can work more onto a page, sometimes only 1 will fit. They key thing here is to not force it and wind up with pages that read poorly due to over or improper use of keywords.
The next thing to do is add TEXT content to the pages.
Page Content
Pictures are nice and video is very cool but the only thing that a search engine spider can make sense of is plain ole words on the page. Without words on the page, it becomes very difficult to rank on page 1 of the SERPs.
So figure out a way to work some solid, keyword relevant text content onto each page. Make sure it targets the designated keyword for each page and that it reads well for the visitors that come to your site.
Use the structural tags provided by the HTML standard to make your pages read better and to emphasize the importance of keywords within the text. On this page for instance I use an H1 tag right at the very top of the page to ensure that the first thing a search engine spider encounters when it reads the page is the main keyword phrase for the page. I then use an H2 tag right underneath the NAV bar on the page to highlight some keyword relevant text .
Page Structure
I use H3 tags to format the paragraph titles, which just happen to be related to the main key phrase for the page and I use bold, italic, underlines, etc where appropriate to again emphasize keyword related content.
I use the ALT tags for images where appropriate to squeeze in some additional keyword relevant content. The SEO graphic on this page utilizes the alt image tag to include some keyword relevant text that the spiders can see but normal browser users don't notice.
Meta Tags
It is very important to recall the short course page on meta tags and to ensure that at a MINIMUM, you have unique titles and descriptions for each page that you want to rank well in the SERPs.

The simple items above pretty much cover all the bases for on page optimization, if implemented properly on your pages.
